Investigation Launched into Racial Abuse in Persija-PSM Makassar Match

The operator of the Indonesian soccer league, PT Liga Indonesia Baru (LIB), has initiated an investigation into allegations of online racist abuse directed at three players from PSM Makassar following a recent match against Persija. The players in question, Cape Verdean Yuran Fernandes, Lance Sayuri from Papua, and Erwin Gutawa from South Sulawesi, were subjected to racial slurs on social media after their team drew 1-1 with Persija on July 3.

CEO Ferry Paulus of LIB stated that individuals found to be involved in the online racist attacks would face sanctions, emphasizing the seriousness of the online abuse and citing the Electronic Information and Transactions (ITE) Law. The gravity of the issue has prompted calls from the Indonesian Association of Professional Soccer Players (APPI) for the suspension of Liga 1 in response to the racist abuse.

In response to these calls, PSSI chairman Erick Thohir declined to comment on the suspension of Liga 1 but committed to taking action against racist abuse. He mentioned that PSSI has conducted an internal probe and received a directive from the PSSI chairman to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.

Racial abuse in sports remains a significant concern, and the intervention of authorities and sports organizations in addressing these issues is crucial to maintain a safe and inclusive environment for all athletes.

Instances of racism in sports not only impact the targeted individuals but also perpetuate discrimination and division on a broader scale. It is imperative for sports organizations to take a firm stance against racism and implement stringent measures to address and prevent such behavior.

The PSM Makassar case highlights the ongoing challenges faced by athletes who experience racial abuse. By addressing these issues and holding perpetrators accountable, sports organizations can convey a clear message that discrimination has no place in sports.

As discussions regarding racial abuse in sports continue, it is important to promote inclusivity and diversity within the sporting community. By fostering a culture of respect and understanding, athletes from all backgrounds can feel valued and supported in their sporting pursuits. It is through collective efforts and proactive measures that the sports community can work towards eradicating racism from the playing field and creating a more inclusive environment for all athletes.
