The Origin of Persija Jakarta’s ‘Tigers Kemayoran’ Nickname and The Story of Murtado
Discussions surrounding the Capital Club are consistently thought-provoking. From player life to transfer activity, and deeper into history. But have you ever wondered about the origin of the ‘Macan Kemayoran’ nickname for Persija Jakarta? Allow me to share the story of Murtado, the Tiger of Kemayoran.
Forward .. Forward .. Persija ..
Go forward Persija never back down …
Show your fangs, subdue your opponent ..
We always support you..
Jakmania, the dedicated fanbase of Persija Jakarta, faithfully chants the aforementioned lyrics each time the Kemayoran Tigers take the field. In the book “Bepe 20: Pride” (2014), Persija Jakarta legend Bambang Pamungkas recounts this magical ritual.
According to Bambang, commonly known as Bepe, the life of Persija Jakarta is encapsulated in the moniker of the Kemayoran Tiger. This name continues to embody the unwavering support from Jakmania.
“Our support will not only alleviate their burden, but also provide the team with additional strength, confidence, and motivation, encouraging our ‘tigers’ to proudly represent the Kemayoran Tigers,” he wrote.
Jakmania consistently views football as a team sport, valuing the collective over individual prowess. Consequently, club loyalty has intensified, with supporters constantly assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the team.
The title of the Kemayoran Tiger has evolved into a cherished symbol, fostering a new culture and identity. Chanting “Macan Kemayoran” becomes a unifying mantra, making every participant feel like an integral component of the Club.
“I am confident that the spirit of the Kemayoran Tiger still resides in your heart and soul,” added Bepe when reminiscing about his late friend and fellow Jakmania, Gugun Gondrong.
The early origins of the Macan Kemayoran moniker can be traced back to a formidable Betawi champion known as Murtado. Though not as renowned as Si Pitung and Si Jampang in terms of martial arts prowess, his abilities were equally impressive. Therefore, Murtado was fittingly dubbed the Kemayoran Tiger.
Murtado’s bravery and exploits have been immortalized in various literary works, elevating him to the status of a folk hero. One such story, recounted by Amanda Clara in the book “Folklore From Sabang to Merauke” (2008), portrays Murtado’s courage in defense of the Betawi people against Dutch oppression.
Born in 1869, Murtado was renowned for his valiant efforts in safeguarding the people from all forms of injustice, whether perpetrated by local champions or Dutch authorities. His unwavering dedication to the Kemayoran community propelled the Kemayoran Tigers to widespread acclaim throughout Batavia.
