A tragic and deeply distressing event unfolded in Indonesia when Haringga Sirla, a 23-year-old supporter of Persija Jakarta, was fatally assaulted by a group of Persib Bandung fans just prior to the scheduled match between the two teams in Bandung. The brutal attack resulted in Haringga’s untimely demise, prompting widespread shock and outrage throughout the country.
In response to this deplorable act, law enforcement swiftly apprehended 16 individuals in connection to the assault. According to reports, Haringga and a companion were accosted by a group of Persib supporters who were inspecting identification cards from individuals not hailing from Bandung upon their arrival at the Gelora Bandung Lautan Api Stadium. As Haringga possessed a Jakarta ID card, he was pursued and besieged by the hostile crowd, culminating in his fatal assault using hands, feet, and various objects such as wooden planks and helmets.
This distressing incident is regrettably not an isolated occurrence, as it marks the seventh fatality of a supporter linked to a match between Persib Bandung and Persija Jakarta since 2012. Local football analyst Akmal Marhali has underscored the recurrent nature of such tragic events, attributing it to the historical negligence by authorities and the insufficient penalty for acts of violence and vandalism in Indonesian football.
In the wake of this heartrending development, the Indonesian Football Association has conveyed its sincerest condolences, expressing its desire for the prevention of similar incidents in the future. Ridwan Kamil, the governor of West Java, also denounced the barbaric actions of the perpetrators and bemoaned the tainting of Persib’s victory by a small faction of its supporters.
Persib Bandung and Persija Jakarta are widely acknowledged as the most preeminent and financially robust clubs in Indonesia’s Liga One, the nation’s premier football league. Despite Persib’s 3-2 victory in Sunday’s match, the jubilation of the win was overshadowed by the tragedy earlier that day.
This disturbing incident underscores the urgent necessity for more stringent measures against violence and criminal behavior in the realm of football. It is imperative that the authorities assume a critical role in ensuring the safety and security of supporters who attend matches, and take decisive measures to prevent future such tragedies from occurring.
