The Bandung Police have issued a somber statement in light of the tragic beating of Haringga Sirila, a 23-year-old Persija Jakarta fan, at the hands of Persib Bandung supporters. It was announced that eight individuals have been identified as suspects in connection with this incident, which occurred just prior to a Persib vs Persija match on Sunday.
According to Bandung Police crime unit chief Adj. Sr. Comr. M. Yoris Maulana, a total of sixteen people have been detained, with eight of them now designated as suspects. The suspects have been referred to only by their initials, and it is possible that further individuals may be implicated as the investigation progresses.
The police disclosed that Haringga had traveled to Bandung alone to attend the match and was accompanied by a friend who was a resident in the city. However, upon their arrival at Gelora Bandung Lautan Api Stadium, they were intercepted by a group of Persib fans conducting ID checks, specifically targeting non-Bandung residents.
A source, speaking on condition of anonymity, verified the details of the encounter, recounting how individuals were singled out based on their ID cards. Tragically, Haringga, who possessed a Jakarta ID card, was pursued and surrounded by the mob of fans before being subjected to a brutal assault.
The severity of the attack was further described by Yoris, who stated that the perpetrators used their hands, feet, as well as various objects such as wooden planks and helmets to inflict fatal harm on Haringga.
During police questioning, one of the detainees shockingly admitted to participating in the attack by stating that he simply followed the actions of the other Persib supporters. Authorities continue to seek additional suspects and have issued a public appeal for cooperation, urging anyone involved to surrender themselves.
In the meantime, Heru Joko, the head of the Viking Persib Club, expressed profound remorse over the tragic loss of Haringga. He offered a sincere apology for the distressing incident and emphasized the club’s full support for the ongoing law enforcement procedures being conducted by the police.
This tragic turn of events serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of violence within football fan culture. The authorities remain steadfast in their pursuit of justice and accountability, with the suspects facing severe charges under Article 170 of the Criminal Code for their roles in the vicious assault.
As this distressing chapter continues to unfold, our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of Haringga Sirila. The football community must unite to ensure that such senseless acts of aggression are unequivocally condemned and that the pursuit of justice remains unwavering.
