Unlike traditional forms of gambling involving tangible items such as cards and dice, online gambling presents a greater challenge for authorities to detect, as individuals can discreetly participate in these activities from the confines of their homes or public spaces like coffee shops without arousing any suspicion.
Holi has highlighted that the high population density within the Tambora district contributes to the widespread practice of online gambling, with residents independently engaging in these activities through personal devices. What may start off as a casual and harmless attempt to test their luck often leads to addiction for many individuals who are drawn into the allure of potentially winning big.
To address this issue, the Acting Governor of DKI Jakarta, Heru Budi Hartono, has instructed regional authorities to take decisive action in cracking down on online gambling. In Tambora, Holi has revealed that various measures have been implemented to educate the public and dissuade them from participating in online gambling. This includes leveraging local officers and youth organizations to raise awareness about the adverse impacts of online gambling and discourage involvement in such activities.
Furthermore, Hadi Tjahjanto, the Head of the Online Judi Eradication Task Force and Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs, has underscored the widespread exposure to online gambling across various sub-districts in Jakarta. Apart from South Bogor District, which records the highest number of online gambling participants and transactions, Tambora Subdistrict is among the areas with a significant presence of online gambling, boasting thousands of players and substantial monetary transactions.
Hadi has stressed the infiltration of online gambling to the grassroots level and has called for the active involvement of local authorities in eradicating these illegal activities. It is crucial for sub-district and village leaders to take responsibility for preventing their areas from being utilized as hubs for online gambling and ensure that citizens refrain from engaging in such detrimental behaviors.
Regarding the larger scale of online gambling transactions, West Jakarta leads with the highest transaction value, followed by various regencies and cities such as Bogor City and Bogor Regency. These statistics underscore the widespread nature of online gambling and highlight the urgent need for unified efforts in curtailing its prevalence.
