Government Pledges to Strengthen Cybersecurity in the Wake of Ransomware Attack

In a recent announcement, Hadi Tjahjanto, the Coordinating Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Minister, revealed that the country is making significant strides to improve its cybersecurity capabilities, even though less than one third of all regional administrations have specialized response teams for cyberattacks. During a visit to the National Cyber and Encryption Agency’s (BSSN) cyber monitoring system control center in South Jakarta, he facilitated an online meeting with various state and regional bodies’ computer security incident response teams (CSIRTs) to assess their readiness to protect their databases from potential threats. In an official statement, Hadi stressed the importance of direct interaction with all CSIRTs in Indonesia to evaluate their preparedness to handle both external and internal threats. According to his assessment, 93 of the central government’s 160 bodies and 156 of 552 regional administrations have established tech response teams. Hadi later described these figures as a “significant progress” in strengthening the country’s cybersecurity measures.
