PT Liga Indonesia Baru (LIB) takes the allegations of racial abuse against three PSM Makassar players very seriously. The players, Yuran Fernandes, Lance Sayuri, and Erwin Gutawa, were subjected to online racist attacks following a match against Persija. LIB CEO Ferry Paulus has asserted that any individuals found to be involved in the abuse will be subject to sanctions. Additionally, he has noted that PSSI chairman Erick Thohir has initiated an internal probe to prevent such incidents, leveraging existing laws such as the Electronic Information and Transactions (ITE) Law.
The racial slurs targeting the three players surfaced on social media subsequent to their team’s 1-1 draw with Persija on July 3. Certain posts went to the extent of accusing the players of deliberately running out the clock to secure the draw.
In light of these events, the Indonesian Association of Professional Soccer Players (APPI) has urged the Soccer Association of Indonesia (PSSI) to consider suspending Liga 1. While PSSI chairman Erick Thohir did not directly address the call to suspend the league, he did express a commitment to combating racist abuse.
