Persija Jakarta is proud to announce the successful acquisition of Ryo Matsumura, a highly skilled attacking midfielder hailing from Thai League 1 club BG Pathum United. At 28 years old, this Japanese football prodigy has joined our team as part of our strategic efforts to bolster our lineup for the upcoming 2023/24 season. Ryo’s prestigious signing represents the third significant addition to Persija’s roster this off-season, following the arrivals of Rizky Ridho from Persebaya Surabaya and Akbar Arjunsyah from Gresik United.
Ryo Matsumura commenced his career in his native Japan, where he diligently honed his talents at the esteemed Vissel Kobe academy. Throughout his professional journey, he has showcased his skill and dedication while representing various clubs in Japan, including Tochigi SC, Tokushima Vortis, and Nagano Parceiro. In 2019, Ryo ventured into Southeast Asian football by joining Rayong FC, ultimately achieving promotion to the Thai League 1 following a successful campaign in the Thai League 2.
After a brief tenure at Rayong FC, Ryo made a noteworthy move to Chiangmai FC, where he notably demonstrated his prowess by making an impressive 34 appearances and scoring 16 goals during the 2020/21 season. He subsequently joined BG Pathum United, where he notably triumphed in securing the 2021 Thailand Champions Cup. However, limited playing time at BG Pathum United prompted him to embark on a loan spell with Police Tero, where he made ten appearances without registering a goal.
Ryo’s fortunes took a positive turn during his loan spell with Persis Solo in the 2022/23 season. He emerged as a standout performer for the team, amassing 28 appearances, 11 goals, and six assists. His exceptional contributions on the field caught the attention of Persija, ultimately leading to his signing with the club following the expiration of his contract with BG Pathum United.
In expressing his enthusiasm for joining Persija, Ryo emphasized his eagerness to contribute to the team’s pursuit of the Liga 1 title in the upcoming season. Additionally, he cited the influence of former Borussia Dortmund manager Thomas Doll, who currently leads Persija, as a significant factor in his decision to join the club. Ryo expressed excitement at the prospect of collaborating with Thomas Doll and contributing to the team’s success on the pitch.
Ryo Matsumura’s arrival at Persija Jakarta has ignited a wave of optimism among fans, who eagerly await the impact he will undoubtedly make on the team’s performance in the upcoming season. Possessing remarkable skill and experience, Ryo is poised to play a crucial role in Persija’s quest for success in the fiercely competitive Liga 1. As the new season approaches, all eyes will be on Ryo as he dons the iconic number 7 shirt for Persija. His tenure with the club holds the promise of an exhilarating journey filled with unforgettable moments and remarkable achievements.
