Indonesian soccer league operator PT Liga Indonesia Baru (LIB) is currently undertaking an investigation into allegations of online racist abuse directed at three PSM Makassar players, specifically Yuran Fernandes, Lance Sayuri, and Erwin Gutawa, following a recent match against Persija.
CEO Ferry Paulus of LIB has unequivocally stated that individuals found to be involved in the online racist attacks will be subjected to sanctions. “PSSI chairman [Erick Thohir] has issued a directive, and we have carried out an internal inquiry to prevent such incidents. This online attack is severe, and there are legal repercussions,” Ferry stated, as reported by Tempo, referencing the Electronic Information and Transactions (ITE) Law.
The three PSM players bore the brunt of racial slurs on social media subsequent to their team’s 1-1 draw with Persija on July 3. Certain posts levied accusations against the players for engaging in time-wasting tactics to secure a draw against their opponents.
In response to the racist abuse, the Indonesian Association of Professional Soccer Players (APPI) has called upon the Soccer Association of Indonesia (PSSI) to suspend Liga 1. Nevertheless, PSSI chairman Erick Thohir has declined to comment on the appeal to suspend Liga 1, but has made a commitment to taking action against racist abuse.
Racial abuse in sports is a grave issue that demands attention at every level. Not only does it impact the targeted players, but it also casts a negative light on the integrity of the sport. Such incidents have no place in a contemporary and all-encompassing society and must be vehemently condemned.
