On Thursday, the Jakarta International Stadium conducted the RCTI Premium Sports International Tournament semifinal, in which a youthful Persija Jakarta team secured a 1-0 victory over PSIS Semarang, earning them a spot in the final against Selangor FC.
The Persija Jakarta team, typically comprised of experienced players, delivered an outstanding performance with a squad primarily composed of young talents. Despite the absence of key players due to international commitments or rest following a demanding Liga 1 Indonesia season, Persija fielded a team with seasoned individuals such as Cahya Supriyadi, Maman Abdulrahman, Tony Sucipto, Akbar, and Aji Kusuma.
Similarly, PSIS also heavily relied on their young players and had the additional support of foreign talents on a trial basis, which included defender Adam Mitter, striker Yehven Bokhashvili, and attacking midfielder Reza Heidari.
In the midst of an electrifying atmosphere, fueled by passionate Jakmania supporters, Persija took command from the beginning, applying pressure on the PSIS defense. The occasional counters from PSIS were effectively managed by the experienced Maman in defense, ensuring Persija’s defensive strength.
The breakthrough occurred in the 22nd minute when Akbar scored a powerful header, granting Persija the lead. As both teams continued to fiercely battle, the score remained unchanged, and Persija triumphed with a hard-earned victory.
The emotional conclusion of the match saw veterans Maman and Tony bidding farewell to the Jakmania. The veteran players, aged 43 and 38 respectively, announced their departure from Persija, with Maman indicating retirement and Tony expressing his intention to continue playing for teams in the lower leagues.
Looking forward, Persija is set to face Selangor FC in the final on June 2nd, following PSIS’s participation in the third-place play-off against Sabah FC on the same day.
The stage is now set for an exhilarating final as Persija Jakarta, propelled by their youthful vigor and seasoned expertise, goes up against Selangor FC in a highly anticipated clash for the championship title.
