Legendary Indonesian Footballer Ismed Sofyan Announces Retirement

After dedicating 25 years to professional football, Ismed Sofyan, a revered figure at Persija Jakarta, has ultimately decided to retire. The 44-year-old made the announcement of his retirement from professional football on Monday through a poignant Instagram post. “There is a new chapter awaiting me, filled with new experiences. Some may call it retirement, but to me, it signifies happiness,” shared Sofyan.

Originating from Aceh Tamiang, Ismed Sofyan devoted 21 years to Persija Jakarta, contributing to the club’s triumph in the 2017–2018 season of the Indonesian first division league. Expressing his gratitude to his team, he conveyed, “I express my gratitude to Persija for granting me opportunities for 21 years and achieving remarkable feats with the Jakmania (fans).”

Transitioning to Bekasi FC, Sofyan continued to exhibit his prowess on the field, albeit not achieving the success he had aspired for. “I am grateful to FC Bekasi for another year on the pitch and concluding my career here,” he remarked.

In his international career, Ismed Sofyan holds one of the highest caps for the Indonesian national team as a right-back, having participated in over fifty matches. He made his senior debut on October 13, 2000, during the Asian Cup 2000 in Lebanon, after representing Indonesia U-19 and U-23.

In an interview, Sofyan expressed his desire for how he will be remembered as he bids farewell to the football world, citing the words of Argentine footballer Lionel Messi, “When I retire from football, I hope I will be remembered for being a decent guy.”

Under the guidance of the Indonesian Football Association, Persatuan Sepak Bola Seluruh Indonesia (PSSI), the Indonesian national football team advanced to the next round of the 2026 World Cup Asian Zone qualifiers after securing a 2-0 victory over the Philippines. This remarkable triumph instilled hope and optimism, as articulated by Indonesian President Jokowi and national team coach Shin Tae-yong, who pledged to continue propelling the team towards success in the World Cup qualifiers.

In the wake of Ismed Sofyan’s retirement announcement, former Indonesian national team players and fans alike are reflecting on the remarkable legacy left by the revered football icon. From his notable accomplishments with Persija Jakarta to becoming an integral part of the Indonesian national team, Sofyan’s contributions to the sport have undoubtedly left an enduring impact on the local and international football arenas.
