Persija Jakarta, the reigning champions of Liga One, recently announced the appointment of Tavares as their new head coach. With an impressive coaching background that includes leading the Vietnam national team and managing esteemed clubs in Saudi Arabia, China, and Iran, Tavares brings a wealth of experience to his new role.
At 63 years old, Tavares boasts a proven track record and is no stranger to the international football scene. He previously managed the Vietnam national team in 1995 and 2004, as well as serving as the head coach for the Jordan and Haiti national teams. His extensive coaching career also saw him at the helm of Al Hilal FC in Saudi Arabia, Chongqing Lifan in China, and Sepahan in Iran.
Expressing his enthusiasm for his new position, Tavares stated, “I am very happy to join Persija. I hope to bring Persija out of this difficult situation. I want to win a lot here.” His arrival marks a significant change for Persija, as he becomes the club’s third head coach of the 2019 season, following Ivan Kolev and Julio Banuelos.
However, the task ahead of Tavares is daunting, as Persija Jakarta finds themselves in a challenging position this season. Currently sitting 14th in the 18-team league, the club is 28 points behind league leaders Bali United. Their recent league match against Borneo FC ended in a disappointing 1-0 defeat, further highlighting the struggles they are facing. With an upcoming match against Persela Lamongan, the team is looking to turn their fortunes around.
In addition to their domestic campaign, Persija’s 2019 AFC Cup journey came to an end at the group stage, adding to their recent string of setbacks. Despite these challenges, Tavares remains optimistic about leading the team to success and revitalizing their performance.
