Persija Jakarta, also known as Macan Kemayoran, has been directed to pay 20.7 billion Rupiahs to their former striker, Marko Simic, following a salary dispute that was resolved at FIFA’s Dispute Resolution Chamber. Simic, a Croatian footballer who played for Persija Jakarta from 2018 to 2021 and scored 73 goals in 111 games, departed the club under contentious circumstances at the conclusion of the previous season.
According to Simic, the club failed to compensate him during the COVID-19 pandemic from May 2020 to April 2022, which led to his departure. His absence during the latter part of the 2021/22 season stemmed from disagreements with the Persija Jakarta management. Following a brief stint with Serbian club FK Radnicki 1923, Simic brought his case to FIFA, resulting in a favorable ruling for the 35-year-old footballer.
In its decision, FIFA mandated Persija Jakarta to reimburse Simic with 20.7 billion Rupiahs, covering his outstanding wages, bonuses, as well as accommodation and travel expenses. The ruling also encompassed compensation for the breach of Simic’s contract. Persija Jakarta was granted a 45-day period to fulfill the payment; non-compliance would result in a registration ban for the upcoming transfer window, precluding the club from recruiting new players. Nonetheless, the management of Persija Jakarta has not issued any official statement regarding the matter.
The decision by FIFA underscores the significance of upholding contractual obligations and the rights of players in football. It serves as a reminder to clubs to honor their financial commitments to their players, particularly during challenging times such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, the ruling emphasizes the importance of seeking dispute resolution through appropriate channels for equitable and just outcomes.
Looking ahead, it is imperative for football clubs and players to ensure transparent and respectful communication in addressing salary disputes and contractual matters. Adhering to proper contractual obligations and upholding ethical and professional standards are crucial for fostering a positive and conducive environment within the football industry.
As the football community awaits the response of Persija Jakarta, the outcome of this case underscores the significance of accountability and integrity in professional sports. It is essential for all parties involved to uphold the spirit of fairness and equity, which are integral to the integrity of the sport and the well-being of those who contribute to its success.
