The Turbulent Beginning of Persija Jakarta’s History in Bandung

On June 1, 1995, a football match between Bandung Raya and Persija Jakarta at the Siliwangi Stadium in Bandung descended into chaos. According to “Pikiran Rakyat,” the incident was triggered by a decision made by Referee Drs. I Made Sudra (Denpasar) to award Bandung Raya an indirect free kick, following a suspected backpass to Peri Sandria, which was caught by Persija’s goalkeeper, Haryono. The resulting protest by the entire Persija team and subsequent confrontations with the referee and security personnel led to the match being halted in the 68th minute.

The aftermath of the chaos saw Bandung Raya emerging victorious with a score of 3-1 through goals from Dejan Gluscevic (14th minute), Tibidi Alexis (21st minute), and Peri Sandria (43rd minute), with Persija managing to score a consolation goal through Iskandar in the 54th minute. However, the PSSI Disciplinary Committee’s decision to award an additional goal to Bandung Raya resulted in a 5-1 defeat for Persija, along with a three-point deduction and a fine of Rp 5 million.

The implications of this event were substantial, as it marked the beginning of a strained and tumultuous relationship between Persija Jakarta and the local public in Bandung. This tense atmosphere has persisted in subsequent seasons, impacting the team’s reception by the community to the present day.
