KATHMANDU, December 10: In a remarkable display of skill and determination, Rohit Chand, a pivotal defender for the Nepal national football team, played an instrumental role in guiding Persija Jakarta to victory in the Go-Jek Liga 1 championship held in Jakarta, Indonesia, on Sunday.
In the crucial final league match, Persija triumphed over Mitra Kukar with a score of 2-1, finishing the season as champions with a record of 18 wins, eight draws, and eight losses across 34 matches. The team accumulated a total of 62 points, narrowly surpassing second-placed PSM Makassar by a single point. This significant victory not only marks the first title for Persija after concluding the previous season in fourth place but also secures their entry into the AFC Championship playoff and the AFC League Cup for the upcoming year.
Rohit Chand’s contributions were indispensable to Persija’s successful campaign, as he participated in 31 of the 34 matches and scored three goals. His exceptional performances throughout the tournament earned him the coveted title of ‘Most Valuable Player,’ surpassing notable competitors such as David Da Silva of Persebaya and Wiljan Pluim of PSM.
A product of the All Nepal Football Association (ANFA), Rohit began his professional career in 2009 with Machhindra Club in the prestigious Martyr’s Memorial A-Division League. At just 19 years of age, he was recognized for his outstanding defensive capabilities and awarded the title of Best Defender during a commendable league season. Following his impressive tenure, he transitioned to the I-League, where he played for Hindustan Aeronautics Limited Sporting Club from 2010 to 2012, further enhancing his reputation throughout South Asia.
In 2012, he joined PSPS Pekanbaru and later returned to Persija for a period from 2013 to 2015, contributing six goals in 46 matches. After a year-long stint with Malaysia’s T-Team in 2016, he joined Manang Marshyangdi Club before returning to Persija in 2017.
