Indonesia’s Modern Train System Declared National Vital Object

In recent correspondence from the Ministry of Transportation, the light rail transit (LRT) train system linking the Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, and Bekasi (Jabodebek) regions has been officially designated as one of Indonesia’s national vital objects. This decision was made following a decree issued by the Directorate General of Railway on January 8, 2024, after a comprehensive evaluation process that commenced in October 2023. The assessment involved meticulous document verification, deliberation, and on-site verification, with active participation from key stakeholders such as the Transportation Ministry’s Railway Safety Directorate and National Police (Polri).

Mahendro Trang Bawono, the Public Relations Manager of the Jabodebek LRT, underscored the pivotal role of the LRT in meeting the travel demands of its patrons. Apart from offering a contemporary and strategic mode of transportation, it also contributes to the economic, social, and cultural development of Indonesia. The designation of the Jabodebek LRT as a national vital object signifies the forthcoming implementation of extensive security measures, underscoring the paramount importance of ensuring the safety and security of the train system and its services.

Bawono stressed the need for security measures to cover the LRT stations, offices, tracks, and auxiliary facilities to shield its operations from potential disruptions. As the first automatically-driven train in Indonesia, it is crucial to uphold the safety and security of the Jabodebek LRT. This necessitates the cooperation of the community in preserving and safeguarding the LRT as a critical asset of Indonesia. Bawono urged individuals to abstain from engaging in acts of vandalism against the train or its facilities and to report any suspicious activities that may pose security threats to the LRT.

The inclusion of the Jabodebek LRT among the national vital objects ensures a comprehensive security approach, aligning with the relevant railway laws and providing a framework for safeguarding national vital objects. These measures will fortify the safety and uninterrupted operation of the LRT as it serves the public and contributes to the advancement of the nation.

The dedication to the safety and security of public transportation in Indonesia is commendable. Such measures are indispensable for maintaining smooth and secure operations, particularly for a modern train system like the Jabodebek LRT. Initiatives of this nature set a precedent for other nations, while reaffirming Indonesia’s dedication to excelling in public transportation.

The voyage of the Jabodebek LRT is closely monitored by the community, and the declaration of its significance as a national vital object showcases the nation’s commitment to ensuring top-notch protection and security for essential public infrastructure.

As a contemporary and strategic asset of the nation, the Jabodebek LRT is well on its trajectory to being acknowledged and esteemed by the public as a safe, dependable, and crucial mode of transportation in Indonesia.
