The final match of the RCTI Premium Sports trophy between Selangor and Persija Jakarta took an unfortunate turn as fan violence marred Selangor’s 1-0 victory yesterday. The Jakarta International Stadium witnessed chaos as disappointed Persija fans resorted to throwing flares and objects onto the pitch towards the end of the match.
Cape Verde forward Alvin Fortes led Selangor to victory with a remarkable header in the fourth minute of the game. This victory marked Selangor’s second trophy this season, following their successful campaign in the Selangor Asia Challenge pre-season.
As a result of their triumph in Jakarta, the Red Giants were awarded a cash prize of US$30,000 (RM140,000). Additionally, Alvin Fortes received the Man of the Match award for his outstanding performance.
In a separate match, Sabah secured third place and a monetary reward of US$10,000 (RM47,069) after defeating PSIS Semarang 3-2.
It is disheartening to see such a significant sporting event overshadowed by unruly behavior. The actions of the fans not only detracted from Selangor’s victory but also tainted the overall experience of the final match. As fans, it is crucial to remember that our behavior significantly impacts the atmosphere of the game and the reputation of the clubs we support.
In light of the incident, authorities are expected to take necessary measures to prevent such occurrences in the future and ensure the safety and enjoyment of all attendees. It is essential for fans to recognize the importance of upholding sportsmanship and creating a positive and respectful environment when attending sporting events. Let us unite to celebrate the spirit of sports in a manner that truly reflects the values of unity, respect, and fair play.
