Witan Sulaeman, a prominent member of the Indonesian national football team, has experienced a remarkable career trajectory, replete with unexpected developments that have ultimately led him to his current position as a player for Persija Jakarta.
Originally from Palu, Central Sulawesi, Witan’s transition to Jakarta commenced when he signed a 3.5-year contract with Slovak club AS Trencin. His arrival in Jakarta was met with great anticipation, as Persija Jakarta urged its supporters to give a warm welcome to this promising addition to the team.
Witan’s football journey began at the Galara Utama soccer school (SSB) in Palu City, where he quickly established himself as a standout player, even during his time in junior high school. His participation in the Indonesian Student League and the Kemenpora Cup set the stage for his future success.
Upon completing junior high school, Witan relocated to Jakarta and gained acceptance into PPLP Ragunan, a pivotal moment in his career where he crossed paths with Egy Maulana Vikri and eventually earned a spot on the U-19 Indonesian national team.
Internationally, Witan’s career gained momentum with appearances at the Toulon Cup in France and the 2019 SEA Games with the U-23 Indonesian national team. His exceptional abilities were also on display in the 2020 AFF Cup, where he earned the title for the most assists, despite the team falling short in the finals against Thailand.
In 2018, Witan’s career took an intriguing turn when he attracted attention from a European club, generating speculation of a potential transfer akin to his national team colleague, Egy Maulana. However, while a move to Europe appeared imminent, Witan ultimately continued his career with the Liga 2 2019 club, PSIM Yogyakarta, where his standout performances caught the eye of the Indonesian national team coach.
From PSIM Yogyakarta, Witan made a bold move to FK Radnik Surdulica in the Serbia League, before ultimately finding his way to Lechia Gdansk, Poland, alongside Egy Maulana Vikri, and later being loaned out to Slovak club FK Senica.
As he embarks on the next chapter of his career with Persija Jakarta, marking his debut in Liga 1, Witan boasts an impressive array of achievements, including the 2019 AFF U-22 Cup, the 2019 SEA Games silver medal, and a runner-up finish in the 2020 AFF Cup, solidifying his status as a formidable force in Indonesian football.
