Numerous Indonesian football clubs, including Persija Jakarta of Liga 1, have been issued registration bans by FIFA, preventing them from registering new players for the next three transfer windows.
The affected Indonesian clubs include Persiwa Wamena, Persiraja Banda Aceh, Persikab Kabupaten Bandung, and Sada Sumut FC, and they are prohibited from signing any players during this period.
Although the specific reasons for the bans have not been officially disclosed, it is widely speculated that longstanding financial issues may have been the primary cause. This speculation is based on Persija Jakarta’s well-documented financial dispute with Croatian striker Marko Simic during the COVID-19 pandemic, which is believed to have influenced FIFA’s decision.
Persiraja Banda Aceh and Persikab Kabupaten Bandung have also encountered financial crises in recent years, potentially contributing to their sanctions. The inclusion of Sada Sumut FC on the list remains unexplained.
Financial difficulties have persisted for Persiwa Wamena for several years, leading to their merger with amateur side Bina Putra FC and subsequent hiatus.
Persija Jakarta and Persikab Kabupaten Bandung have expressed their dedication to resolving the issues resulting in the registration bans, while Persiraja Banda Aceh awaits a decision from the Football Federation of Indonesia (PSSI).
In addition to the Indonesian clubs, several Southeast Asian teams, including defunct clubs from the Philippines, Vietnam, and Malaysia, as well as crisis clubs from Malaysia and Thailand, are also confronting similar bans. Notably, Indian, Iranian, Uzbek, Kuwaiti, Saudi Arabian, and Chinese clubs have also been impacted.
The consequences of these bans are substantial for the future of these clubs and may have enduring ramifications on the football landscape in this region.
It remains to be seen how these clubs will navigate through this challenging period and whether they will be able to rectify the issues leading to their sanctions.
The FIFA registration bans underscore the significance of financial stability and accountability in football clubs and serve as a cautionary tale for other teams grappling with similar challenges.
